Family Time

This summer has flown by and I must confess I have been inwardly whining about the fact that there was no time, or funds for that matter, to take our annual trip to Cape San Blas.
My tendency is to be discontent and to have a restless spirit. Always wanting to see progress and to accomplish something. But I don't want to live for the next vacation, or the next weekend because then I miss the here and now. This morning our entire family volunteered at the local food pantry. For several months now we spend at least one morning/month sharing the gospel and handing out groceries. Everyone has a job and knows just where they fit.  Metz, who is 4, looks forward to going and greeting people. Audrey and Eli jump at the chance to fill bags full of groceries for hungry people and all of the boys carry groceries out to waiting cars. They are learning to serve.....
I think too often we want to be entertained and look at service as something we do for others when ( and if) we find time away from our busy lives. But it's more than that. When you care for someones physical needs you show them that they can trust you when you talk to them about their spiritual needs. When we serve the poor and the needy we are serving God. What better way could there be to spend a summer and what better way to spend time together as a family?
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18
